Semi Final Heartbreak for North Star

North Star 67 – 68 UU Elks

The North Star Premier League team travelled to Craigavon Leisure Centre last weekend to compete in the BNI Cup Final Weekend.  North Star faced the University of Ulster Elks from Jordanstown on Saturday in the second Semi Final. It was a match up which placed the league winners and runners up against each other and it promised to be an exciting and close contest. It certainly lived up to the pre game billing however it was a disappointing end to the season for North Star as the Derry side lost out by a single point despite a last second shot attempt which agonisingly rolled around the rim and then out as the full time buzzer sounded.

 

North Star Finish Season on 6 Game Win Streak

North Star finished up the 09/10 season this week with two wins in the space of 2 days however the Ulster Elks also managed to finish the season with two wins meaning the Derry side will have to be content with joint second place in this years Basketball Northern Ireland Premier League final standings. North Star have had a strong finish to the season with 6 consecutive wins which will give the Derry side good momentum going into the BNI Cup Semi-Final versus the Ulster Elks on 3rd April.

North Star 76 – 64 Ulster Elks

North Star kept their faint title hopes alive with an exciting home win over league leaders the Ulster Elks on Thursday night. It was only the Elks second loss all season and will give the Derry squad confidence as they face the Elks again in 2 weeks in the BNI Cup semi-final. It was a win in which the depth of the North Star squad was vital with new fewer than 11 different players managing to get on the score sheet and an impressive balance in the scoring with 30 points in the paint, 28 from outside shooting and 16 from the free throw line.

 

U19 Boys finish Season 11 - 3

North Star u19s finished in second place in the BNI u19 Boys league with an overall record of 11 - 3. The boys finished just one game behind the winners Belfast Star and will rue missed chances in their three losses all of which were extremely close games. It was still an impressive season for the squad which has improved year on year since finishing bottom of the u14 development league just 3 seasons ago. The boys now look forward to the Huge BNI Cup final clash versus Belfast Star on Sunday 21st March. During the season North Star lost out in Belfast and won in Derry in two verly closely contested games and the final is expected to be another tight affair.

North Star 45   L’Kenny Blaze 42

A tight contest between 2 closely matched teams; however North Star held the edge throughout the game. Hugh Barbour got off to a quick start for North Star scoring early with 2 free throws to go with several clean jump shots. Blaze responded with scores from Seamus Hickey from distance to include a buzzer beater to end the first and third quarters.
