Interview – John Ginnity John Ginnity

North Stars first season in senior basketball since they were reformed in 2002 saw them promoted to the Ulster Premier League and the second season was going to be a tough test of the newly formed clubs ability. Luckily it coincided with “Playing for Peace” setting up an operation in Derry and two American Coaches, John Ginnity and Pat Maloney (and later in the same year Scott Hettemann), were sent to the North-West to help establish the program in the area. The coaches put a tremendous effort into basketball in the area through both their playing and coaching skills and the effects can still be seen today. North Star u18 boys had to make the long trip to Castleisland in Kerry last weekend to compete in the All-Ireland club championships for the first time in the club’s short history.

The top 20 under 18 teams in the country had been split into 4 pools of 5 teams and the top 2 teams from each pool would advance to the quarter finals in December. North Star faced a tough draw with two of the favourites for the tournament St Mary’s Castleisland and Templeogue Dublin in their group along with Longford Falcons and local rivals Donegal Town.

Derry Players Represent Ulster in Italy

In just over a week 10 of North Star Basketball Club’s junior members will be boarding a plane for Italy as they travel to take part in an international basketball tournament. The 10 came through a gruelling trial process to be chosen to represent Ulster and will be spending a week in Northern Italy near Venice. It is a fantastic achievement for the club and brings to a close the most successful season in its relatively short history. Further good news was received when one of the clubs coaches was asked by Basketball Northern Ireland to take on the role of head coach of the under 18 boys Ulster squad and prepare them for and coach them during the tournament.
